Tha Good Good, Week of 2.14.20
Here's a roundup of some podcasts, documentaries, articles, and ideas I've been into this week.
1. Moment I'm still fired up about –
Bong Joon-ho's Best Director acceptance speech
How did the 92nd Academy Awards make up for putting us through upwards of 712 musical performances and weird unnecessary double introductions? By awarding Parasite and Bong Joon-ho -- a man whose movies fckn slap -- the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. I was crying in the club when they announced the awards and I'm still crying now.
2. Show everyone needs to watch –
Schitt's Creek on Netflix
I can't believe I slept on this show for so long. Maybe I thought I was above it, maybe the title evoked feelings similar to those brought on by my lactose intolerance. Then one fateful winter night in Jersey, after drinking a couple glasses of pinot and stealing two too many spoonfuls of my mom's homemade cookie dough while wearing only a men's XL sweatshirt and UGG slippers, I finally watched the first episode. And now, I urge you to watch the first episode. It's so worth it. Thanks for the rec, @Peje.

3. Writer I'm enjoying –
Jia Tolentino
My friend and fellow newsletterist Bob (follow him on his journey here) turned me on to Jia Tolentino, staff writer for The New Yorker and author of the best selling book, Trick Mirror. With every piece she writes -- be it about the Westminster Dog Show or abortion rights -- Tolentino straps you into her submarine, then dives so far deep into the topic that by the time you surface, you're a changed person.
Read the piece that initially got me hooked.
4. Poem I'm re-reading –
Dear Basketball by Kobe Bryant
From the moment
I started rolling my Dad’s tube socks
And shooting imaginary
Game-winning shots...
I knew one thing was real:
A love so deep I gave you my all.

5. Quote I'm thinking about –
You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you.
