EATS: Prebiotic Fiber

Prebiotic Fiber
There's a lot of talk out there about probiotics (aka "good" bacteria). While probiotic supplements may be beneficial, we actually already have hundreds of strains of probiotics in our digestive tract. In order for these microorganisms to keep us from getting sick, they need to be well nourished. Cue prebiotics.

  • What? Prebiotics feed the good bugs in your gut. In turn, the good bugs keep your digestive tract healthy.

  • How? According to Dr. Hyman, "Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function and of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health."

  • Gimme dat good gut! You can find prebiotics in onions, sweet potatoes, and garlic. But my personal favorite way to get after my gut health is drinking Olipop, a healthy (and addictive) alternative to soda that's packed with prebiotic fiber. My fave flavor is Strawberry Vanilla.
