Tha Good Good, Week of 5.5.20
Here's a roundup of some podcasts, documentaries, articles, and ideas I've been into this week.
1. Book I'm reading –
Wild by Cheryl Strayed
Cheryl Strayed lost her mother when she was just 22. She dealt with the pain by not dealing with it: sleeping with countless men, getting pulled under a current of addiction, disengaging from her family. Wild recounts the summer of '95 when Strayed chose solitude, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from California to Washington. The book isn't particularly riveting nor spectacularly written. Rather, Staryed quite literally takes us step by step on a journey up the west coast and into her subconscious. This is a slow, steady tale of grief, solitude, and the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.
Read a meditation on grief and survival.
2. What I'm listening to –
Tiny Desk Concerts from NPR
Tiny Desk Concerts are simple, intimate. No fancy lights or moving stages. Just artists playing for people. At a time when our longing for human connecting gnaws at us like a sore tooth, such intimacy provides comfort.
Start with H.E.R. or Mac Miller.
3. Docuseries I'm watching –
The Last Dance from ESPN
People everywhere are praising the sports gods. NBA cameramen were granted unprecedented access to follow Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls throughout their '97-'98 title run, and this 10-part series is the long-awaited result. Considering I'd agree to shave my legs during quarantine if it meant bringing back Yankee games and NCAA tournaments, this backdoor look inside the making of a legacy is a welcome bit of sports.
Watch a compelling basketball series.
*If you're new to 30 for 30s, start with The U or The Two Escobars.
4. Article I'm reading –
Jeff Bezos' Fashion Flex on Not Boring
Thanks @Steven for the rec. This blog post offers a fascinating take on Amazon's new Rent the Runway knock off and how the company plans to start using their own produced content (Prime Video) to sell more clothing. We can only hope that Miriam Maisel's dresses will become available for purchase next.
Learn how Amazon is looking to expand from selling clothes to selling fashion.
5. A pertinent quote –
"The breaking of so great a thing should make a greater crack. The round world should have shook lions into civil streets and citizens to their dens."
— William Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra
